4 Ways To Add More Tie-Down Points to Your Truck Bed

When you buy a truck, it typically comes with tie-down points on each corner of the bed. However, that may not be enough anchor points for individuals who need to strap down more items, or if they have heavy cargo. This guide will give you four ways to add more tie-down points to your truck bed.

Utilize the Extra Ports

While most trucks have available anchors already built-in to the bed, some manufacturers provide additional ports with no ring. These extra points are simple to take advantage of—pop off the plastic panel covering the hole and install D-rings from Intercon Enterprises. You’re lucky if your truck has these extra points because you won’t need to weld on hooks or cut into the sheet metal of the bed.

Create Multiple Anchors With Chain

This unconventional way of adding anchor points to your truck bed is a nifty trick for creating many of tie-down points. You’ll need a chain link (the length of the truck bed or the length between the two corner access points), quick links, and a turnbuckle. Use the quick link to attach one end of the chain and the turnbuckle on the other end to tighten the chain until there is no slack.

Adding this chain could give you over 20 anchor points, but note that the chain should not be used for heavy-duty equipment or oversized items.

Cut Additional Holes in the Bed

Add more tie-down points to your truck by cutting a small hole in the sheet metal of the bed. Going this route gives you more control over where you place the rings. Ensure that you drill and cut the holes on a flat part of the bed, and secure the extra D-rings through the new holes.

Use Self-Tapping Screws or Weld-On D-Rings

If you don’t feel comfortable cutting holes into the sheet metal, you can use self-tapping screws or weldable D-rings to create additional tie-down points in the truck. Only decide on this option if you do not travel with heavy items; otherwise, they will likely rip out the D-ring from the screws. Only use this option if you travel with lighter equipment.

Welding on the D-rings, using chain, or cutting a hole into the truck bed’s sheet metal are viable options for creating more tie-down points. Make sure you inspect the bed of your truck for additional ports before adding more. You might be surprised to find ones already available to you; you’ll just have to buy extra D-rings!
