The 5 Basic Kinds Of Pipe Alignment Clamp

Pipe alignment tools have come a long way. New pipe purging equipment and pipe alignment clamps have outstripped older technology by a huge margin. Now, pipe purging equipment is all but necessary, and pipefitters will find a wide range of clamp options. In fact, there are five different types of clamps used regularly.

  1. Precision
These are small clamps used for alignments that require absolute accuracy. Precision clamps are typically used for pipes 9.5-305 millimeters in diameter. The clamp distance allows room for orbital welding tools without too much difficulty.
  2. Cage
Cage clamps are either rigid framed or cable clamps are used for pipes between two inches and 60 inches. They are mostly used for aligning the pipe exterior, and they are manufactured so that each clamp only works for one pipe size. These are incredibly versatile and common clamps.
  3. Chain
These clamps can reform and align pipes between one inch and 20 ft in diameter. Typically, chain clamps have enough room under the jack bar to use an arc welding gun. There are accessories to this type of clamp which can help the welder to find the proper alignment point.
  4. Pneumatic
Pneumatic clamping systems use air to internally align pipes with a diameter between six and 60 inches. They provide full control and ample workspace for welders, which reduces fatigue. The main benefit of this type is speed to actuate alignment.
  5. Hydraulic
Hydraulic systems use liquid instead of air to accomplish similar goals. Hydraulic clamps are typically used in the same range of pipe sizes for internal alignment and take a bit longer to reach the alignment point but are also a bit more precise with their application force.

When you are aligning pipes, it is important to have the right tool for the job. Small imperfections might not seem like a big deal, but they can have big repercussions.
